Guided terrarium-building sessions for groups, held in our Houston-area studio or on location. Materials, vessels and instruction are included, and every guest leaves with a finished terrarium.
Terrariums are generally low maintenance, but we have some suggestions to ensure your terrarium remains healthy and lasts a long time.
WATERING
Every 2–3 Weeks
A light watering when condensation and moist soil disappear. Some terrariums go months without.
WATER TYPE
Filtered or Distilled
Use dechlorinated filtered water or distilled water to protect the roots.
LIGHT
Bright, Indirect Light
Keep out of direct sunlight. Add a grow light if your space is dim.
FRESH AIR
Open Every 6 Weeks
Lift the lid every six weeks or so to let fresh air circulate.
01
When to Water
For moss terrariums, it's important to monitor condensation levels and check if the soil remains moist. If you notice neither, it's time to add water. Moss terrariums typically require light watering every 2-3 weeks, although some may not need water for several months.
02
Placement Matters
The watering frequency depends largely on where you place your terrarium in your home. If it's located far from a window, it will need less water but may require a grow light to stay healthy. Conversely, terrariums kept near a window will need more water, so placement is crucial.
03
Use the Right Water
Always use filtered water that has been dechlorinated to avoid burning the roots and upsetting the bacterial balance. Distilled water is also a good option as it helps reduce mineral deposits.
04
How to Water
To water your terrarium, use a spray bottle or a watering can with a pointy nozzle for better control. Never overwater your closed terrarium.
05
Light
It's important to keep your terrarium out of direct sunlight to prevent the plants from overheating and drying out. Place your terrarium in a well-lit area or consider adding a grow light if your windows aren't bright enough.
06
Fresh Air
Remember to open the lid every six weeks or so to allow fresh air to circulate inside the terrarium.

TERRARIUM CARE
Terrarium FAQ
Are your terrariums made with live plants?
Yes. Our planted terrariums are created with live plants and natural materials. Plant varieties may vary depending on availability and the environment best suited for the terrarium.
How much light does my terrarium need?
Terrariums do best in bright, indirect natural light. Avoid strong direct sunlight, especially through a window, as the glass can trap heat and damage the moss and plants. If your terrarium includes an LED light, it can be used as supplemental lighting when needed.
Is condensation inside my terrarium normal?
Yes. Some condensation is normal in a closed terrarium and is part of its natural water cycle. Heavy condensation that completely covers the glass for long periods can indicate excess moisture. In that case, briefly opening the terrarium can help release some humidity.
Why is my moss turning yellow or brown?
Moss can change color because of too much light, excessive heat, too little moisture, or changing environmental conditions. Keep the terrarium away from direct sunlight and monitor its moisture level. If you’re unsure, send us a photo and we’ll be happy to help troubleshoot.
Should I leave the LED light on all day?
No. The LED should not be left on continuously. The amount of supplemental light needed depends on where the terrarium is placed and how much indirect natural light it already receives.
Can I trim the plants inside my terrarium?
Yes. Plants can be gently trimmed as they grow. Regular trimming can help keep the terrarium balanced and prevent faster-growing plants from overcrowding smaller ones.
How long will a terrarium last?
With proper care, a terrarium can continue growing for years. Because it is a living miniature ecosystem, it will naturally change over time. Plants may grow, need trimming, or occasionally need to be replaced.
What should I do if I see mold?
A small amount of mold can occasionally appear as a terrarium establishes itself. Remove any affected dead leaves or plant material and allow a little additional airflow if the terrarium is overly wet. If the problem continues, contact us and send a photo so we can help.
Do you make custom terrariums?
Yes. We create custom terrariums in a variety of sizes and styles, from small tabletop pieces to large statement terrariums and specialty designs. Contact us to discuss the size, style, and space you have in mind.
Can you create a terrarium using a container I already own?
Possibly. If you have a special glass vessel or container you’d like transformed into a terrarium, send us photos and dimensions. We can determine whether it is suitable for the plants and design you’re considering.
Do you offer terrarium workshops or private parties?
Yes. We offer hands-on terrarium workshops and private group experiences for adults, businesses, and special events. Workshop options can be customized depending on group size and theme.
Do you ship terrariums?
Shipping availability depends on the terrarium’s size, design, plants, and destination. Some terrariums can be shipped, while larger or more delicate custom pieces may require local pickup or another delivery arrangement. Contact us about the specific piece you’re interested in.
Do you offer local pickup or delivery?
Yes. Local pickup is available for many pieces, and delivery may be available for larger custom projects. Details and any applicable delivery charges are confirmed before purchase.
What if I have a problem with my terrarium after I bring it home?
Please contact us. Photos are especially helpful when diagnosing plant, moss, moisture, or lighting issues. We want to help you understand what’s happening and how to care for your terrarium.
